Telecontrol and Automation Systems

Control Engineering designs and manufactures telecontrol and automation panels for the remote monitoring, control and communication of electrical systems.

We integrate customer-specified RTUs, PLCs, communications devices, protection relays and other intelligent electronic equipment into complete, factory-wired assemblies.

Telecontrol and Automation Equipment

Our capabilities include:

  • RTU panels
  • Substation automation panels
  • SCADA interface panels
  • Active Network Management panels
  • PLC control panels
  • Communications and data cabinets
  • Intertrip communications panels
  • Marshalling and interface panels
  • Alarm and monitoring panels
  • Equipment and communications racks

Assemblies can be designed for new installations, extensions to existing systems or the replacement of obsolete equipment.

Equipment Integration

We can incorporate customer-specified equipment from a range of manufacturers, including:

  • Remote terminal units
  • Programmable logic controllers
  • Protection relays
  • Intelligent electronic devices
  • Communications gateways
  • Ethernet switches
  • Routers and communications devices
  • Fibre-optic equipment and patch panels
  • Power supplies and DC converters
  • Human-machine interfaces
  • Alarm and indication equipment
  • Interface relays and terminals

Equipment is arranged to provide clear access for operation, testing, maintenance and future replacement.

System Interfaces

Telecontrol and automation panels can provide the connection between field equipment and remote monitoring or control systems.

Typical functions and interfaces can include:

  • Remote plant status and indication
  • Circuit-breaker control
  • Alarm and event signals
  • Analogue measurement inputs
  • Digital inputs and outputs
  • Intertrip and control signals
  • Protection relay interfaces
  • SCADA and RTU interfaces
  • Communications equipment
  • Time-synchronisation equipment
  • Local control and indication
  • Marshalling of field cabling

The exact functions and interfaces will be determined by the approved system architecture, drawings and project requirements.

Panel Design and Manufacture

Where design is included, our engineering team can develop the panel layout, schematics, wiring diagrams and terminal arrangements around the specified equipment and system requirements.

Design considerations can include:

  • Equipment dimensions and mounting requirements
  • AC and DC auxiliary supplies
  • Power supply redundancy
  • Signal and voltage segregation
  • Copper and fibre communications
  • Cable entry and termination
  • Earthing arrangements
  • Heat dissipation and ventilation
  • Equipment accessibility
  • Space for future additions
  • Interfaces with existing equipment

Alternatively, panels can be manufactured and wired from customer-approved drawings.

Testing

Completed assemblies are inspected and tested against the approved drawings, specifications and agreed testing requirements before delivery.

Testing can include:

  • Visual and mechanical inspection
  • Wiring and continuity checks
  • Power supply checks
  • Input and output checks
  • Alarm and indication checks
  • Interface and functional testing
  • Customer factory acceptance testing

Customer or third-party system specialists can attend or support factory acceptance testing where equipment configuration or communication with external systems is required.

Software, Installation and Commissioning

Our core scope is the design, manufacture, wiring, testing and supply of telecontrol and automation panels.

RTU or PLC programming, protection settings, communications configuration, site installation and commissioning will only be included where specifically stated within our quotation.

Replacement and Upgrade Projects

We can support the replacement or extension of existing telecontrol and automation equipment.

This can include:

  • Replacement RTU panels
  • New panels designed to interface with existing systems
  • Equipment upgrade assemblies
  • Additional input and output capacity
  • Replacement mounting plates and panel fronts
  • Migration of existing circuits to new equipment
  • Bespoke interfaces between old and new systems

Existing drawings, equipment schedules, photographs and system information can be reviewed to determine the required scope.

Project Documentation

The agreed documentation package can include:

  • General arrangement drawings
  • Electrical schematic diagrams
  • Wiring diagrams
  • Terminal schedules
  • Cable and core termination information
  • Equipment and label schedules
  • Network and communications layouts where included
  • Test documentation
  • As-built drawings
